The Scheherazade Initiative has itself become a powerful metaphor for resilience. In late January, after more than a year of preparation and immense ground work, fundraising, outreach, and prelude concerts in cities around the world – even as our super-orchestra of artists from across the globe began to assemble on stage – The Scheherazade Initiative became the first concert in 124 years at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage to be cancelled on account of inclement weather as New York City and State shut down public transit and roads in the city.

One of the hallmarks of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, which anchors our concert program, is the way in which the music frequently comes to a pause, holding a note or a chord, often with tremendous energy and expectation. These moments are never endings, but rather moments in which energy and momentum are gathered, which then enables the music to go forward with new found power, focus and intention. We feel much the same about the musical and communal “hold” or fermata which appeared on the entire Scheherazade Initiative just a few hours before the concert was to begin on January 26th. We are now emerging, renewed and reinvigorated to enable great music to add new voices to ending violence against women and girls.

We are deeply grateful to the Carnegie Hall administration, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, our donors and supporters, our soloists – Susanne Mentzer, Elmira Darvarova, Robert Langevin, Sarah Kay – and our extraordinary community of distinguished musicians from many of the great American and international orchestras, ensembles, and music academies, along with our indefatigable production team, who have all been so patient and so generous about their continued energies and participation. We look forward to seeing you at Carnegie Hall on October 19th! Please mark the date on your calendar and make your tax-deductible donation today, either online or by mail.
